GRIME II, the surreal Metroidvania action-adventure from developer Clover Bite and publisher Kwalee, is set to launch on PC via Steam in 2025. In the latest developer diary, director Yarden explores one of the sequel’s most beloved mechanics — the parry — revealing major upgrades and new layers of player freedom.

According to Yarden, parrying in GRIME II has been reimagined as a deeply integrated part of combat and character growth. The new “Pliability” attribute directly impacts parry damage, allowing players to specialize in reactive combat builds. A redesigned skill tree introduces new and returning traits that affect parry behavior, which can be freely reassigned at checkpoints for complete flexibility.
Players can now parry both projectiles and melee attacks — even mid-air — right from the beginning. Some of the game’s living weapons, known as Molds, and other weapon types are designed to synergize with parries, rewarding precise timing with powerful counterattacks or unique effects. For those preferring alternative combat styles, GRIME II offers diverse builds centered on agility, Mold casting, or raw weapon mastery.
Set in a haunting world defined by art, transformation, and flesh, GRIME II expands the series’ signature surreal aesthetic. As the Formless, players absorb enemies to reshape abilities and forge living weapons in a realm sculpted from bone and ceramic. A demo showcasing the enhanced parry system and evolving combat mechanics will be released soon.
