After years of radio silence, developer Lunar Software has broken cover with a major development update on Routine, their long-awaited sci-fi horror game set in a retro-futuristic lunar colony. First announced back in 2012, the game is finally approaching the finish line, according to a new Steam post from the studio.

Routine places players in an eerie moonbase overrun by killer robots, where survival relies more on caution and atmosphere than combat. Armed with a minimal HUD and a 1980s-style handheld scanner, players explore abandoned shopping plazas, arcades, and living quarters haunted by lurking threats. While the gameplay and design have evolved over time, its core tension-driven premise and moody aesthetic remain central.
Lunar Software, a small team of three, teamed up with publisher Raw Fury in 2022 to push development forward. While composer Mick Gordon (of DOOM fame) exited the project in 2024 due to scheduling issues, the team will still use his audio work and guidance in the final release.
Although there’s still no concrete launch date, the developers emphasize that Routine is “very much in active development” and that they’re “beginning to approach the finish line.” More news on a release window is expected soon.
