Nintendo has shared an in-depth look at Donkey Kong Bananza during a dedicated Nintendo Direct broadcast, highlighting the game’s unique approach to movement, combat, and exploration. Launching July 17 exclusively for Switch 2, this 3D platforming action-adventure sees Donkey Kong team up with an unexpected ally—Pauline, now reimagined as a mysterious singer named Odd Rock.

Set deep beneath Ingot Isle, the story begins as a golden banana discovery sends DK crashing into the depths of the planet. There, alongside Pauline, he uncovers a sprawling subterranean world powered by music, mystery, and myth. Their shared goal: reach the fabled Planet Core before the sinister Void Company does. This villainous mining operation, responsible for Pauline’s transformation and the planet’s upheaval, seeks the core’s power for darker purposes.
Gameplay blends heavy-hitting brawling with musical mechanics, as players unlock DK’s powerful abilities—like the Dive Punch, Turf Surfing, and the iconic Hand Slap—and combine them in creative ways. By building “Bananergy,” Pauline can trigger powerful transformations such as Zebra Bananza for high-speed dashes or Ostrich Bananza, which grants DK the ability to fly and drop explosive egg bombs. All of these forms offer new traversal and combat possibilities.
Co-op play is central to the experience, with local split control via Joy-Con and support for GameShare and GameChat. One player takes control of DK, the other of Pauline, and both characters bring distinct gameplay mechanics to the adventure. Players can also collect Banandium Gems, Chips, and Gold to unlock new skills, outfits, and fur variations, while fossil collectibles offer cosmetic customizations through the in-game Style Shops.
The Direct also introduced a variety of game modes and side features. Players can relax with Getaways, use Eelevator creatures to fast-travel between regions, take photos in Photo Mode, or get creative in DK Artist mode, where Joy-Con motion controls allow players to carve stone and add custom lighting and effects.
Additionally, Donkey Kong Bananza will support amiibo functionality. A new Donkey Kong and Pauline figure will launch day-and-date on July 17, unlocking exclusive items such as Pauline’s Diva Dress and powerful KONG tiles. Scanning other amiibo will grant terrain bonuses and additional rewards.
Donkey Kong Bananza launches worldwide on July 17 for Nintendo Switch 2, and can be pre-ordered (NL_BE, US) now.
