After vanishing into obscurity more than a decade ago, Captain Blood has finally launched across modern platforms, giving players a long-overdue chance to experience the swashbuckling action game that once seemed lost to time. Publisher SNEG has officially released the retro pirate adventure today on PC via Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store, as well as on Mac, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. The game debuts at $24.99/€22.49 with a 10% launch discount.

Captain Blood was originally developed in the 2000s for a planned release in the early 2010s, but the project was derailed when its original publisher went bankrupt. Legal complications further delayed its release, effectively dooming the game to development limbo—until now. With the blessing of the original developers, SNEG stepped in to restore and publish the title, preserving its decade-old design and aesthetics while updating it just enough to run on modern systems.
Inspired by the golden age of hack-and-slash games, Captain Blood puts players in the boots of a rum-soaked pirate hero tasked with rescuing a magistrate’s daughter from ruthless captors. Players will brawl their way through enemy ships and seaside strongholds, wielding pistols, cutlasses, and cannon fire in a linear campaign full of dramatic quick-time events and over-the-top finishers. It’s a blast from the past in both look and feel, channeling the style and mechanics of Xbox 360 and PS3-era action games.
According to SNEG co-founders Artem Shchuiko and Oleg Klapovskiy, the release is as much a tribute to the developers who never got to see their work go live as it is a win for preservation. Former project lead Sergey Makeev, now at Roblox, echoed the sentiment, calling the launch “almost unreal” and “a moment of pride and joy for the entire team.”
For fans of classic action games, forgotten gems, or just a good old-fashioned pirate adventure, Captain Blood offers a window into an alternate past—one where its original release might’ve earned it cult classic status long ago.
