Firaxis has shared a detailed look at what’s coming in the next major update for Civilization VII. Update 1.2.0 is currently scheduled for release on April 22, 2025 (subject to change), and introduces some of the most requested improvements from the community—including overhauls to the resource system, population growth, and multiplayer functionality.

Key Features in Update 1.2.0
🔹 Resources Overhaul
- 10 new resources, each tied to new narrative events.
- Resource distribution is now partially randomized with each Age still guaranteeing key materials.
- Introduction of “Hemisphere Identity”: certain Treasure Resources only appear on one side of the map.
- Treasure Resources now provide passive empire-wide effects (similar to Empire Resources).
- Classic resources like Horses and Furs reclassified as Treasures.
- Balance changes and future improvements to resource management UI planned.
🔹 Improved Population Growth
- The old cubic growth formula has been replaced with a smoother quadratic curve.
- Cities can now grow beyond 8–9 rural population without major delays.
- Food-heavy strategies are now more viable, and AI behavior has improved as a result.
🔹 New Endless Mode – “Just One More Turn…”
- Continue your game after the Modern Age without progressing through Ages.
- No new win conditions, but players can still chase achievements and finish other victory paths.
- Expansion to other Ages planned in future updates.
🔹 Teams Multiplayer
- Players can now form teams in multiplayer.
- Teams share map visibility, war/alliance status, and victory conditions.
- Technologies, Civics, and Legacy Paths remain individual for each player.
- Espionage between teammates is disabled.
🔹 Additional Quality-of-Life Improvements
- Research Queuing: Click deeper techs to auto-queue prerequisites.
- Repair All: A new option to quickly restore damaged infrastructure.
- Disaster Tuning: Fewer natural disasters on lighter settings.
- Map Generation Tweaks: Improved coastal erosion for more dynamic coastlines.
- UI & Bug Fixes: Ongoing polish to usability and interface.
Looking Ahead: What’s Still in Development?
Following the release of Update 1.2.0, Firaxis will take more time in May to focus on internal development, with the next major Check-In coming in June. Some of the larger features still in progress include:
- Auto-Explore
- More Advanced Game Setup Options
- New Map Types and Sizes
- Steam Workshop Support
The Civilization VII team has emphasized that these features are still being worked on, but require more time to refine.
“Right to Rule” Collection Delayed
The upcoming Right to Rule Collection, originally planned for earlier in 2025, will now launch later this summer. It includes six DLCs, all expected to be delivered by September 2025.
