Today, during Nintendo Direct, Nintendo has officially announced that the Nintendo Switch 2 will launch on June 5, 2025. The console will be available as a standalone unit priced at $449.99 / CAD$629.99 / £395.99 / €469.99 / 49,800 yen, and also as a bundle including a digital copy of Mario Kart World for $499.99 / CAD$699.99 / £429.99 / €509.99 / 53,980 yen. Pre-orders are set to open on April 9, 2025.

The Nintendo Switch 2 features a 7.9-inch 1080p HDR display supporting up to 120fps refresh rate, while maintaining the same thickness as the original Switch at 13.99mm. The Joy-Con 2 controllers are larger and can function like a mouse in compatible games, attaching magnetically to the console. The system includes 256GB of internal storage, a significant upgrade from the original Switch’s 32GB, and offers a battery life ranging from two to 6.5 hours, depending on usage. It also features two USB-C ports, with the dock supporting up to 4K 60fps gaming and including a built-in fan for cooling.
A notable addition is the “C” button on the right Joy-Con 2 controller, which activates the new GameChat feature. This built-in mic-enabled system allows voice chat with up to 12 people and supports video chat when a compatible USB-C camera is connected. GameChat will be available without a Nintendo Switch Online membership until the end of March 2026, after which a membership will be required.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is backward compatible with most original Switch titles. Nintendo has provided a detailed resource page outlining compatibility, noting that while most games will run smoothly, some may have startup or in-game issues. The company is working to improve compatibility and plans to release patches for certain titles to enhance performance on the new system.
